Q&A: I give my dog Science Diet light. I give her the correct amount for her weight.?

Science

Question by regwoman123: I give my dog Science Diet light. I give her the correct amount for her weight.?
Her backbone is easily felt when I pet her. Does anyone else give their dog Science Diet light that has about the same problem?
My dog is part Lhasa Apso mix. We don’t know what the other part is. My vet recommended it.

Science diet isn’t terribly good food, but it’s impossible to know from your description whether or not your dog is underweight. Being able to feel the spine is completely normal on most breeds. What is her breed/mix?

Question by IggyWiggles: Does anyone have a dog on the BARF diet?
…and with what results? Any tips or info I should know? I have a dog with severe allergies, and I’ve been reading that the bones and raw food diet may help him out, but I’m unsure if I should switch.

Best answer:

Answer by airbull0424
That would leave a hell of a mess to cleanup. Feed him something that he is not allergic to.

Q&A: Buying meat for raw diet dog food at Walmart?

Question by : Buying meat for raw diet dog food at Walmart?
I don’t know where any local butchers are in Pensacola. So I was hoping I could maybe start him off with chicken from walmart until I can find somebody that sells what I need. What kind of chicken should I buy for a 5 pound chihuahua to start him off with the raw diet? Please don’t be mean. I have been doing my research for days, and I’ve joined the raw diet group on yahoo.
I’m just having a hard time finding a meat source.

Best answer:

Answer by BRENNY
Please go to Walmart and get him Puppy food and treats, my aunt tried the raw diet thing with her dogs and they all ended up with diabetes and shortly after they all went blind. Do you really want this for your new puppy. Think about it.

How do you introduce healthy foods (ie Veges, Fruits, Yogurt) into my dog’s diet?

Question by 30 Seconds to Mars: How do you introduce healthy foods (ie Veges, Fruits, Yogurt) into my dog’s diet?
My chihuahua will eat NOTHING else besides chicken, and NO DOG FOOD.
He ONLY eats chicken baby food and whole baked chicken breasts.

I am very worried about his health and lack of other vitamins. How do I train my 6 year old chihuahua to eat some other foods ? I tried giving him a multi-vitamin tablet but he won’t eat those either.

What brand of hard adult dog food has small pieces?

Question by : What brand of hard adult dog food has small pieces?
I have a lab about 5 and she got this muscle problem in her stomach where she can’t digest food properly so the vet suggested either soft food or smaller hard food pieces. Normally I would just give her the soft food, but I also have a 2 yo cattle dog and I would don’t want fat dogs.

So are there any brands of hard dog food that is in small pieces?

Best answer:

Answer by Irony
Hmm… several brands should have them — you might have to look around though.

I wonder if she would do well on a raw fed diet? The food is nice and soft for her.

Homemade Dry Dog Food

Homemade Dry Dog Food

If you want to improve your dog's diet without spending more money, try making homemade dry dog food. This will allow you to know what your dog is being fed, use the best ingredients, and keep an eye on any allergies that could be an issue. This kibble is the type of dog food that any dog would go crazy for. It has the proper amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fiber to keep your dog healthy and happy for a long time. The best part of making dry dog food opposed to wet food is that it lasts longer and you can make larger amounts.

Benefits Of Making Your Own Kibble

There are several reasons why choosing to make homemade dry dog food is the best option for many people. For those dog owners who have dogs with allergies, making your own food can not only save you in vet bills, but medication too.

The dry dog foods on the market pretty much have the same ingredients.

They all contain preservatives and fillers, which are usually the main source of allergic reaction for pets. Making your own allows you to control what you add to your dog's food, so that you can lower the amount of vet visits and possible not have to pay for pills to control your dog's itching, hair issues, and any other allergy related problems.

Saving money has the most benefit for people who make homemade dry food. Wet food is a gamble as it can go bad if not used in three days or frozen in usable portions after preparation. Many people will forget how slowly homemade dog food is eaten. You feed your dog less food as homemade food is higher in nutrients than store bought foods.

So, when people first begin making their won wet food they may find they need to get used to dealing with smaller portions.

Dry foods last longer and make a better transition for most dogs and their owners. You will also notice that your dog produces less waste. When you give dogs foods that they can utilize rather than just fill their bellies, you are making it easier for yourself in the picking up waste department.

Multigrain Dry Food Recipe

A great and easy homemade dry dog food recipe is a multigrain kibble. This recipe makes 20 cups, which is easy to store and lasts a while. Add two cups of whole wheat flour, one and a half cups of all purpose unbleached flour, and a half cup of soy flour into a large bowl. In the same bowl you will also add 1 cup of corn meal, one cup of powdered milk, one cup rolled oats, a half cup of wheat germ and brewer's yeast each, and a tablespoon of salt.

In a small bowl add one large or jumbo egg and five tablespoons of corn oil. Add three cups of water to the dry ingredients in the large bowl and stir. Last add the egg mixture to the large bowl and stir. You will have a thin batter, which is what you want. Pour the mix into cookie sheets about a half inch high and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. You will get a sheet of dog food. Simply break it up into small pieces and store.

How do you make wet dog food from dry dog food?

Question by Golfqueen: How do you make wet dog food from dry dog food?
As my dog has aged, she has since stopped liking to eat any of the dry food we give her. We have tried adding pumpkin (something our vet suggested) to adding her favorite fruit apples but it doesn’t seem to work. Whenever we feed her either homemade or store-bought wet food she eats it right away. I have a lot of dry food left over. I read that if you add hot water to dry dog food it becomes almost the same thing as store wet food. Will this work? Any other suggestions?
